This thread is serious, so treat it seriously. Me and my mans @manchyy love some good ol' DarkRP and have been hinting at it for a while now, but we want to make it a reality (of course with help of @Donkie and @Bayrock and their amazing skills ). You may be asking things such as: Hey isn't DarkRP filled with edgy 12 year old memers? Yes, this is gmod, did you expect anything different? Of course, there'll be annoying kids and minges but with the correct management, that'll be kept to a minimum. What could possibly be gained from hosting such a "cancer" game mode? As you know, as cancer as it may be there's a substantial following for roleplay and servers with good quality content are in demand all the time, and bonkie and bayrock would be the best at supplying this. Alongside that, there's a more social aspect to DarkRP than Flood or Battle Royale; it isn't just some war ground where people face against each other (although most servers make it seem that way). Hey, this has been suggested before and shut down before, why should it be any different now? Because this time there'd be people who're interested in upkeeping the server and making sure that it's being run smoothly. Sure, it'd take a lot of time to develop into an acceptable state, but that doesn't mean it should be completely shut down, I know personally me and manchyy would spend hours a day trying to work on making it to a point where it'd be considered good. After all of that, let's talk about the one thing everyone hates...rules. The rules would consist of the following(?) (these are open to change). RDM - Intentionally killing another user without a valid roleplay reason. You need a valid roleplay reason to murder someone, for example, you can kill someone if they're in a base while you're raiding, but you can't kill someone for running away from a mugging. If a user has caused harm to you, your property or your clan members, you're authorized to kill them. You're required to give users up to 5(?) seconds and clear instructions on what they have to comply with before you're allowed to kill them. NLR - Returning to the point in which you died/re-engaging in the roleplay scenario you were in before death. NLR (New life rule) is the thought that when you die, you forget all previous life experiences and start fresh, meaning you do not know about who killed you, or where you died so you cannot return to the scenario you died in for at least 5 minutes. FailRP - Doing something that you would not normally do in real life (this should be pretty self-explanatory). FearRP - This is the act of not valuing your life. For example: Pulling out a weapon while being mugged/kidnapped. Running away while being mugged/kidnapped. Mugging - The maximum amount you can mug someone for is $5,000, exceeding this will result in a warning. You also have to allow the person 5 seconds to comply. Kidnapping - The maximum amount of money you can return a hostage for is $15,000 ($25,000 if it's someone of importance [Law Enforcement, mayor]). Disrespect - Don't disrespect any of the fellow users/staff members. DDoS - Do not threaten, conspire to or launch a DDoS attack on any of the Devinity servers. This will result in a non-appealable permanent ban. I will grab the popcorn and enjoy the hate.
Grrrrrrrrrr A) I'd want BR to be in a sustainable state before it was even considered. B) This thread doesn't actually address the main issues of how you're going to moderate it and get it off the ground, darkRP is one of the most competitive gamemodes and many of the actually successful servers rely on donation staff ranks. You'd have to have an amazing server before people would even consider paying 10$ for VIP. I'd also want an overwhelming majority of current staff to show a serious interest in moderating it. C) It's an inordinate amount of work, I think it would be appropriate for staff such as yourself and manchyy to be heavily involved with the development stage even before it's released, after all it's one of the easiest gamemodes to set up as so many servers have come before it. D) It would have to replace a current flood server or something until it is actually self sustaining. I really hate the idea of having a darkRP server it's one of the most staff intensive servers to run and as a result you have to cut a lot of corners to have a successful one, but if all those points are met I don't see why not.
Getting servers populated is the hardest part, yes, but once the player base is there it'll just keep on growing. A well-developed server is what draws players in and that's what we'd be hoping to create. We'd be happy to start working on it, although it wouldn't be very rapid progression at the start, it'd still progress into making something successful.
I've never liked DRP, because there are always a lot of addons and always play inadequate people. In terms of a new server, I would add a sandbox ...
I've hosted DarkRP in the past and it's always been a dissapointment, these days everything about DarkRP is just amplified so I assume it'll be as dissapointing. There's this awful trend with DarkRP players expecting certain features on every single DarkRP server (which makes them successful) and its stupid. Pretty much all of @Rick 's points. I feel over-encumbered as it is with developing for flood and BR. However if you guys are open for developing it, we can definitely host it. If you want gmodstore addons you'll have to spend your own money on that, but if the server proves successful we'll pay you back.
Unfortunately DarkRP players expect the same shit on every server and it's not feasible to do it all from scratch
Just gonna input some of my experience here, I used to be a co-owner on a darkrp server before, despite the owner spending like a few hundred on gmod store addons + a 64 slot server, the server just went up to 16 concurrent players then died off swiftly, darkrp is a very saturated gamemode( players always have other options), you have to be on top of most of your competitors to stand a chance.
I would love it if you would add a DRP server, I've been looking for a new one to play on regularly and I'd love to be apart of yours. Looking forward to seeing where this goes!
I would agree with Rick Battle Royale still needs some upgrades. The idea though sounds cool and I think it should be implemented in the future.
