With the help of Bayrock, and Donkie, this gamemode could be amazing. The idea is attempting to replicate a mixture of PERP and several Island type themes. What is an Island theme you may ask?; well it involves several civilian activities. (ie, Fishing, crafting, farming [type of crafting] ect.)

These ideas, if done right can make the gamemode what it is. This involves many different ideas to make it separate from other RPs. The tone of this gamemode is SEMI-SERIOUS. A definition of semi-serious would be if you mixed darkRP with a clockwork gamemode. Things that would define this are walking speeds, and how you acquire jobs.

MOVEMENT SPEED (Best described as clockwork gamemodes)

    - Movement speed is separated into 2 different types.
    - Walking - Much slower than the standard run speed
    - Running - About as fast as DarkRP's standard movement
    - Stamina
    - Stamina can be leveled up and allow your player to run farther distances without losing breath/slowing down.

ACQUIRING JOBS (Best described as PERP-Like Gamemodes)

    - Jobs can be acquired on a much more roleplay-esk manner.
    - Examples of this is you could head to the police station and visit the police NPC. First you must take a civil exam to be allowed into the force, like how to pull over, drive ,and use weaponry.
    - THIS WOULD NOT OR EVER USE AN F4 menu like most rp servers.

    CIVIL LAYERS

    - 3 Different civilian factions ( I mean factions loosely. )
    - Layer 1 would be the default citizen. This would be placed on new players by their steam IDs (or other means of identifying) with automation.
    - Layer 2 would be Upstanding citizen. This is placed on users who have served well, committing little to no crimes. This is acquired by doing normal jobs, as a truck driver, police officer, fireman, taxi driver, bud driver, ect.
    - Layer 3 would be Gangsters or Filth of the city/island. They are frowned upon and watch closely by law enforcement. You obtain this by frequently selling drugs to the NPC/Dealer, or by assassination and killing law enforcement/government. This layer would be able to form gangs and create hostilities.

This is just the surface behind the main idea of Island Life. if you are interested, leave suggestions and feedback below, including in great detail what your opinion is or what you want to suggest.

    BONUSES

Mass amounts of new players and dedicated ones.

A new project for the developers. (Donkie, Bayrock)

New server that can devour the lives of current members even more than before.

Rick would be pleased with a new server.

    NEGATIVES

A new project for the developers. (Donkie, Bayrock)

    Server costs

    A lot of work.

TL;DR - Island Life is a PERP-Like gamemode combined with island themes, and a more fleshed out roleplay experience (Instead of the grow - sell - buy a car idea)

Heyo, whilst I only know very basic gmod lua, it looks like any other c language. I would be happy to start learning it if a project like this showed itself.

In the past I have also been part of the administration on two different servers, this isn't just promoting people, this was actual administative work, so if anybody is needed to look over any mechanics, I am more than willing.

I won't comment on any of the actual gameplay aspects right now because I'm on my phone. However I will say that whilst Donkie does love us, I doubt that he loves us enough to make a gamemode for free, just saying in advanced. Because whilst Bay has a small amount of knowledge, I could do a few things, and I'm sure a few others could too. I feel like we may be reliant on Donkie for a fair amount.

I'm sure donkie can see the amount of work involved in this but his payment would be crazy if the server does come out.

If you've seen the amount of money these types of servers tend to be receiving, you'd shit a bit. Let's say it's entering the thousands. Although it's not just about the money being received, it's about the community in general, nothing compares to the uniqueness.

I was interested in the idea of this gamemode when you mentioned it before you created this constructive thread.

I'd certainly be interested in working on a project similar to this if we're allowed to take full reigns.

I'd really like to have @Donkie on board with me on this before I begin making any promises. He's expressed in the past that currently his schedule and interests won't allow him to dedicate the time he needs to efficiently develop the Flood and another gamemode but maybe he'll like this idea.

I've got some basic knowledge of Lua and obviously experience hosting a server and managing the community. Though I only recently started to flesh out on my Lua knowledge so I have learning to do before I can take on a project like this on my own.

I'd certainly be interested in helping with this project though. It seems like a good concept in my eyes.

Donk would certainly be compensated if the new gamemode/server could generate revenue so he's not necessarily wrong.

Thanks for the response Bayrock! Hopefully I'll be able to develop this with you guys. You guys have a very professionally run community and I respect that.

This seems like an awesome idea. A truly unique roleplaying gamemode would do wonders for the community. I can't help much with programming (my knowledge is VERY limited) but if you need any graphical resources, mapping/texturing help, count me in!

Not sure if nick could really help with the complexity of it. You'd most likely have full reigns and development control. He's really the main idea man, although god damnit nick stop bringing back darkrp ideas. c:

Alright, so I got together with a friend and I spoke to him about this because we had basically nothing to do, and we came up with a pretty alright concept that manages to combine Skilling + Grinding with a Modern style RP.

I'd like to say firstly that this is only a first draft of the idea, so I won't exactly push for it too hard, but I will take the time to write a good explanation to this idea.

You spoke about the three factions, so I thought about this and I decided that I felt like Tiers to jobs would be a good idea. You'll always have people that want to Grind into the higher levels of jobs, and you'll also have a steady influx of people joining that will take up the lower jobs, creating sort of a layered economy.

There would be Three main 'Factions', as you've said, and the entire concept of the game would revolve around good ol' capitalism, make more and more money type of thing.

The three factions could be as follows:

    Enforcement:
This would be the police and all of the people that Protect the citizens ect.

    Filth:
This would be the lawbreakers, involves Organized crime and Thieving ect.

    Workers:
This would be the law abiding citizens, these are the people that follow the law, Farmers, Fishermen, Miners ect.

Now as I have stated previously, I think that we could tier the jobs in each section, the more you partake in one 'Tree', the better jobs you can have, and the better jobs, the more money you make. Could look something like this.

    Leveling system:
There would be different levels that correspond to each branch of each tree. Once these skills reach a specific level they would be able to transfer into another more advanced job, such as Advanced Fishing, where they would be able to gather more valuable resources. I will now go over what these could perhaps be:

All of the workers would have a level corresponding to their specific job, eg. Mining, Farming, Fishing, Woodcutting. and an additional skill called Bartering. Whilst the Resource skills would give them a direct advantage, perhaps being able to gather Fish more quickly, or Grow Grain more efficiently, the barter skill would be used if a player wanted to transfer into the merchant skill tree.

The 'Filth' would have very different skills, again they would have a barter skill, in order to transfer into the 'Ice Mover' Job, but they would also have the following: Picklocking, Pickpocketing, and Weaponry Usage. Picklocking would be used for opening Chests/vaults dotted around the map with certain respawn timers on each one, the higher the picklocking level, the more valuable the chest's loot. Pickpocketing would allow players to steal either gold or resources directly off of players, and increasing this skill would increase the amount that a player could take at one time, and the Weaponry skill would automatically increase at a rate proportional to the other skills that a player is training, this would of course

The enforcement may seem a little boring skills wise, but that's because it's a smaller job tree, so far the only skill that I have thought up is Weaponry, perhaps increasing slowly over time rather than with the other skills that it actually doesn't have yet, suggestions?

    -----------

Merchants, What the fuck do they do?

Basically, I thought that we could have a system where Workers gather resources, sell them to merchants, and then merchants can sell them off at certain points to NPCs for an even higher price. The merchants would get a higher price for their goods Dependant on their Barter level. (In the case that there is no Merchant on the server players can sell goods directly to the NPC station themselves at a set low price.
Here's an example where a Fisherman catches 10 tuna fish
    [IMG]

Now, balancing would be important in this Gamemode of course, we can't have a miner making twice as much as a fisherman, just like we can't have a Thief making four times as much as a Policeman. So a careful analysis of each job would have to be looked at. However I would also like to have a supply and demand type aspect to the game, so if everybody is fishing, the price of fish goes down, whereas if nobody is mining, the price of minerals goes up.

This is just a first draft, if people like the idea, and think it's 'Doable', I could elaborate farther.

These are some excellent ideas, Rick. Seeing as there is a bank guard, would there also be a "Banker" job? Or would that just be covered by a NPC or teller machine?

Also, if I had a dollar for every time someone spells thief like "theif" I'd be loaded.

Well, I'm not giving you any dollars then, I have an idea for how a bank could work, but I didn't want to put down all of my ideas in one post.

I imagine a bank vault inside of a bank, over time it would gather cash, let's say about $2500 a minute, until it reaches a certain cap, for example $100000 (Or perhaps it could increase with the amount of people in the server) . Obviously then Robbers would be able to perform a heist on the bank, against very highly armed guards, and guards and police would be able to return to the Bank in order to stop the players from stealing the very valuable loot.

Similar to on DarkRP where all locked doors must be picklocked, the same would have to be done with the doors in the bank, this would slow down players, and upon reaching the vault players will have to spend a very long time picking the lock. Upon breaking in, all players are awarded with a portion of the money looted, but in order to keep the loot, they must first reach a certain area (How this could be done I have no idea, open to suggestions).

Nice constructive post and concepts you've got to flesh out on this @Rick.

Reminding me of a Stranded server with an island theme and skilling/gathering; combined with an RP with the economy and playstyle.

I think this could be a great concept if we do find the opportunity to bring it to life.

Stranded in particular though is set on an island and based around skilling. It's just missing the RP and economy parts.

I hate building gamemodes, so as long as it's a semi-serious RP but with like entity crafting, I'm fine, I hate the survival type of hunger, whatever else.

The idea of island life to me is based off the arma gamemode, easily comparable to Altis life, and other life gamemodes. It's a PERP type of rp with multiple normal working traits instead of weed growing and printing. Things like illegal fishing, and legal fishing, along with illegal area type ideas.

Okay maybe some were confused by the general idea in the beginning, let me tell you my vision.

    Starting as a Good citizen.

Let's say the map is Evocity_v2p

    Joining the server....

Just entered the game, closing the MOTD

A window may appear saying please pick a name (EX. John Doe, Danny Willen, Jeffery Norris)

I pick the name John Doe, (THAT NAME IS NOW TAKEN, Noone can change their name or start with a new name as John Doe unless he changes it in the future.

I'm now spawned a somewhere in the city/map.

I have 2 different weapons on me, fists, and keys. (NOTHING ELSE) (Donators could have let's say a physgun)

As a default citizen with no time, spent, I can pick from a small array of different jobs. (Emergency Medic, Fireman, Novice Farmer, Novice Fisher)

To find these jobs, let's say I go to the hospital. The hospital is where I'd find a Doctor (Who can heal your wounds), and a Front Desk Book keeper. The front desk book keeper when pressed e on would then state, something small or whatever, then you have 2 choices. 'Apply for Emergency Medic' or 'Goodbye." If the position is full, like all three spots are taken, then it says, 'Sorry no available positions'. The same would go for all other jobs and have different lines depending on what they are for each. If you become the job, it'll change your model, and hand you a medical kit and defibulator/Autoinjector that can revive downed players. (BEING DOWNED IS A STAGE BEFORE DYING, YOU ARE DOWNED FOR 5 MINUTES IF THERE IS A MEDIC ONLINE BUT RESPAWN IN 10 SECONDS IF NOT.)

So let's say I play the good person route, as a default citizen, I abide by laws, don't harm government officials, ect, I can then become an upstanding citizen. this allows me to join jobs such as the police force or even run for mayor. However this isn't permanent, if you harm officers or the mayor when you have this rank it then lowers your 'reputation value' to the point where you may even be made a default citizen again, or even to the Filth.

Since this is a bit stricter than darkRP in my eyes, as an officer, ect, you can looks at cars to see what speed they're going and then if they're going over the speedlimit set by the mayor in the 'LAW BOOK' (entity/purchasable) they can get persued. (As added things, there is no instant arrest, handcuffing them strips their weapons and makes them walk not allowed to run. Then the police have to sit them in the back of the car and take them to the prison for whatever felony they commited.

Then certain jobs will open up if let's say I've spent 24 hours as a police officer, I get the chance to become a Police chief, or S.W.A.T.

These spawn with whatever weapons you want them to have and control over sections. SWAT cannot be deployed unless the chief says so.

For donators, you'd have the ability to bypass time requirements, ect.

Now since you can see what it's like to play on the good side,

As a baddy, or filth, there are different things you can do to break laws. You can hold up the bank (robbed by talking to the clerk with firearm out, which sounds an alarm, alerting SWAT/POLICE. You can drug run, which means you go to the (Which notifies you as being in a dangerous area/illegal area) slums area and purchase ~~ amounts of drugs for a set price, and then drive across the map with whatever drugs you purchase and arrive at another illegal area, which you can be arrested for entering/leaving and sell all your drugs for like %10 more than what you purchased them for. There is also heavy weapon construction which you can craft in a crafting menu with metals, paint, ect. and start your own weapon ring if you wanted. (Pistols are of course legal but heavy weaponry is not.)

These are just a few ideas that I've envisioned in my head. I might not have written it out so well because I've written this in let's say 20 minutes.
