I thought it was clear we were engaging in friendly banter. me being of Russian nationality myself I find it appropriate I am able to make fun of my own people no?

No, saying such a things about someone's nationality strictly prohibited, even if you're belong to this nationality or "joking" about that, it's extremely inappropriate and we have zero tolerance for that.
